I live in Cirencester, The Cotswolds, UK, and I have a strong connection to Japan, where I lived for fifteen years.
I do a lot of different things, and I have a lot of different passions. First and foremost, I'm a devoted auntie to a number of young people, some of whom I am actually related to, and some of whom I've acquired along the way during a rather interesting and definitely eventful life!
One of my passions is for pickled onions! Having been obsessed with them since I was a child, I eventually started making my own, and launched Auntie Caroline's Pickles & Chutneys in Cirencester in 2013. I now produce around 30,000 jars per year, of over forty different lines, and supply around 50 independent shops around the country.
When I'm not either eating or making pickled onions, I'm either writing books or visiting Japan, where I have been volunteering my time to help a remote fishing community that was destroyed in the 2011 tsunami. Since the disaster, I've raised £170,000 for the people of the Oshika peninsula, and voluntarily managed around thirty different projects there to help them rebuild. I return to Oshika for at least a month every year.
My latest book tells the decade-long story of my friendship with the people of Oshika. One Month in Tohoku: an Englishwoman's memoir on life after the tsunami is an uplifting story that unexpectedly makes readers cry tears of laughter as well as sorrow, giving readers a refreshing new perspective on the challenges that life inevitably throws at us all. The book reassures us that there is love and laughter in the midst of chaos and uncertainty, and restores your faith in humanity during these difficult times. One Month in Tohoku is available in paperback and Kindle on Amazon, from bookstores, and by emailing me directly.
I am a regular speaker on a number of topics, most recently at Pickle Talk & Tasting Events, or on Adventures in Japan. Please do have a look around, and get in touch if you'd like to know more.
